John Singer Sargent and J. Alden Weir on the Porch at Windham

Another close friend, John Singer Sargent, visited Weir at his Windham home in early November 1919, just over a month before Weir died. The two artists became friends during Weir’s early years in Paris. Sargent arrived with his sister Emily on Saturday, November 1st and stayed until Monday. Although Weir’s health was failing, he appears in a photo taken on the porch of the Windham house, standing behind Sargent, who bears an amusing expression, laughing heartily. During the visit, the two artists “would be driven up to Weir’s studio in the fields back of the village—it was too much of a walk for him [Weir] to take by now—and spend happy hours there looking at Weir’s pictures, talking art, and reminiscing over the days of their youth.” 22
